‘Social Listening’: The Consumer Goods Giant Aims to Harness Vaseline’s Social Media Breakthrough.
As a product discovered over 150 years ago on a Pennsylvania oilfield, the modest tin of Vaseline may not seem like an clear candidate for digital platform algorithms.
Nonetheless, its ascent as a viral TikTok topic has placed it at the forefront of an marketing transformation, in which large companies are spending big on content creators and putting fewer resources into marketing items in conventional outlets.
A Journey from Drilling to Digital
First created commercially in the 1870s by scientist Robert Cheeseborough, who observed drillers applying to their skin with a residue from oil extraction. Currently, a wave of content from users have documented the product’s widespread use in “everyday tips”.
Promoted as a fix for dirty sneakers or prolonging the scent of perfume, and also a remedy for squeaky doors. Its use has even extended to stop the scourge of snack dust adhering to hands.
Harnessing the Hype
Noticing its viral resurgence, executives at the multinational boosted the tips by having their research teams evaluate the claims and providing creators with the outcome data.
Assertions that it diminished the sensation of spicy food on lips were confirmed. Similarly supported were ideas it could prolong perfume and rejuvenate purses. Proposals that it might brighten smiles or extend lashes were disproven.
A Plan Built on ‘Social Listening’
Print ads and broadcast spots would once have been the cornerstone of its marketing push. However, this online trend has led decision-makers to dramatically increase investment in content creators.
This monitoring of online platforms to guide corporate planning has been dubbed “social listening”. Fernando Fernández, newly named, has indicated the goal is to spend 50% of its massive marketing spend on social media content.
Evolving With Audience Behavior
A leading Unilever executive, who is leading the online push, said the company was just evolving with contemporary approaches of engaging audiences. She said engaging on social media “without killing the party” was paramount.
“What is the key to genuine brand integration? This remains our core objective as brands, back to when people were hanging out their laundry and discussing household products.
“We are witnessing a departure from a one-to-many model, where we would just transmit messages … Now it’s many conversations, diverse communities. Changes in digital feeds means that these communities feel niche, but they’re not.
“Having your brand advocated by consumers, talked about by other people, that fosters reliability and pertinence. Content makers are key. We are expanding this endorsement system.”
A Revolutionary Change in Media
The strategy reflects seismic changes occurring in how media is consumed, with the youth demographic allocating more attention to social media platforms than television, magazines or radio.
The shift is reflected in drops in TV and print advertising. Within the United Kingdom, advertising income for leading TV channels have dropped substantially in actual value since the end of the last decade.
Influencer Marketing Expansion
Additionally, it points to a media convergence as corporations essentially turn into content studios, partnering with hundreds of content creators to boost their products.
An industry expert from a leading agency said: “Clearly, there is a migration of viewers away from some legacy media and their time is increasingly on digital video and image apps than they are consuming linear broadcasts or printed matter.
“A lot of brands are telling us audiences believe endorsements from the personalities they subscribe to over traditional advertisements. That’s a consistent trend.”
He added firms may also cut expenditures by investing in creators over big traditional media campaigns, which also enables easier content adjustment to see what works.
Such methods are increasing. Promotional expenditure on digital creator partnerships is growing fourfold quicker than the media industry overall. Across the United States, it has increased by over 100% since 2021 and is expected to hit substantial figures in 2025.
The Enduring Power of Broadcast
Regardless of the massive shift, experts said they believed TV advertising still had a prominent role to play, as networks still held the capability to drive countrywide discourse.
The executive noted: “A top-tier ROI marketing event is still the Super Bowl. It's not a matter of networks declaring: ‘We are no longer pertinent.’ The focus is on who seizes focus … I think there’s 100% a place for them.”
