Micky van de Ven scored twice as Tottenham prolonged their unbeaten run on the road in the Premier League and delivered the Toffees their first defeat at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Everton were undefeated in their five previous fixtures at their recently opened stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock, having departed their historic home behind after more than a century at the conclusion of the previous campaign.

But Spurs captain the Dutchman struck twice from set-pieces in the first half to put their strong form at jeopardy, and they were unable to turn it around before the midfielder - assisted by ex-Everton forward the Brazilian - nodded in a third to put the game to bed.

The Everton defender believed he had levelled the tally five minutes after Van de Ven's first goal, glancing a bullet header past Guglielmo Vicario from an set-piece.

Beto, meanwhile, missed a number of chances, while the Italian goalkeeper made a series of excellent saves to guarantee Tottenham went five away games unbeaten in the Premier League.

But the VAR intervened, advising Craig Pawson to review the goal on the pitchside monitor and the referee ruled that Jack Grealish and Iliman Ndiaye were in an illegal position and had interfered with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

This victory moves Thomas Frank's team up to third in the division, a handful of points off north London rivals and leaders Arsenal.

Everton remain in 14th position and sit six points ahead of the drop zone.

Tottenham analysis: The defender fulfils role at each end of pitch

Following a drab midweek performance in the European competition against Monaco, where they mustered a mere two shots on target, Frank opted for Randal Kolo Muani up front instead of ex-Everton forward Richarlison.

The summer signing was failed to influence the game before being substituted for Richarlison after 60 minutes on the pitch, but it turns out he proved unnecessary in the final outcome.

Defender Van de Ven transformed into an attacking force to be reckoned with.

Tottenham's first goal came from a cleverly executed set-piece play, with Rodrigo Bentancur heading the ball toward the six-yard box for an unmarked the defender to score.

And the captain - stepping up as skipper in the Argentine's unavailability - notched his second in first-half stoppage time as he rose above the England keeper to nod in.

Van de Ven was equally impressive in defence, combining effectively with his defensive colleague as the pair dealt excellently with the numerous deliveries sent their way by Everton.

The club's new home had been a fortress, but it seems the freshness may have worn off slightly and fans flocked to the gates after the midfielder's third for Tottenham.

The break in Everton's unbeaten home run won't be a massive concern for the manager, but their attacking woes will be.

Beto and the other striker - the Everton's pair of established strikers - had netted only one league goal between them before Sunday's match.

And they were unable to contribute to that poor tally on a damp and dreary night on Merseyside.

Beto's performance was epitomized when he chose to overhead kick a golden opportunity from near the goal, even with having space and opportunity to readjust for a simpler attempt that would have tested Vicario.

The substitute, too, failed to make an impact after coming on for Beto in the second half.

It was not for a lack of chance. Most of Everton's attacks came through the winger and Ndiaye, who tirelessly whipped dangerous crosses into the Tottenham penalty area.
